RS summer shakedown week
at Sunsail Club Phokaia
RS in conjunction with Sunsail hosted a
specialist week of high performance coaching
workshops at Club Phokaia in Turkey last
week. With nearly 35 degrees of heat and
beautiful winds ranging from 8 - 18 knots,
all the participants learnt learnt at a
steady rate and made huge progress, building
up to the RS Regatta on the Friday. With RS
Fevas, RS Visions, RS Vareos, RS500's and
RS800's taking part, the regatta was for
most the highlight of the week. Prizes for
all competitors helped to make it a real
spectacle. If you are going out to Sunsail
next year, keep an eye open on the Sunsail
website for Summer Specialist weeks.
Thanks again for all those that came and
dropped in on our sessions. |

The First few of the eagerly
awaited Hyundai Teras have made their way to
their respective clubs and members young and
old alike have been making good use of their
new training boats. The RS Tera has now
become an established youth training boat
with large fleets at some of the country's
top training establishments.
Hyundai are sponsors of the RS Youth Sailing
Programme for 2008. One element of this
scheme involves the two year loan of RS
Teras to sailing clubs across the country to
help them promote junior sailing.

2008 RS Q'BA
orders and demonstrations... |
|
|
The new Yachts and yachting
Q'BA
review is now out. A very positive write-up
which will help the boat get maximum
exposure in the market place. See
downloadable review pdf's in later section. |
For any of you wanting to
have a demonstration of the New RS Q'BA
as part of a fleet purchase, please call me
to arrange a date. I will be coming to your
area soon and would love to know how many of
you are still wanting to know what our new
training boat performs like.
"The buoyancy and shape create a lot of
margin for error which helps when learning
about balancing the boat. So the Q'BA
gives a lot of success quickly and builds
early enthusiasm for sailing." John Perham
of Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre
The brand new smaller sister to the RS Feva
has a wide waterline beam and comfortable
side decks, encouraging both adults and
youngster alike to sit out and not in. The
Q'BA
has two rig options and an optional jib for
when it is being used as a double hander.
Length 3.53m, Beam 1.42m and weight around
60kg. Perfect for use as the backbone of all
sail training courses or as a more advanced
adult single hander if used with the Mylar
Pro sail. Ideal replacement for or
compliment to existing fleet of Toppers,
Topaz's or Picos, with many innovative
features that will add massive benefits to
the learning of the clients and ease of use
for the staff.
|
 |
- RS Q'BA
Sport (reefable dacron main), complete
with trolley and top cover - £2258.72 ex
vat before volume discount is applied to
fleet buyers. (ask me for volume
discount breakdown)
- Additional Jib pack -
£139 inc vat before volume discount is
applied.
- Additional RS Q'BA
Pro sail for adults and more advanced
courses - £253.62 ex vat and ex volume
discount.

For more info on our range
please e-mail me for a brochure, boat test
write up and a price list.
- RS Tera Sport
(reefing Dacron main) £1187.23 ex vat
before volume discount. A fleet of 6
would see the boat price drop to just
below £1000 ex vat.
- RS Q'BA
Sport plus Jib (slab and roller reefing
options) - £2118.30 ex vat before fleet
discount. Buy Q'BA
Sports plus Jib kits and get them for
less than £1700 ex vat for a fleet of 6.
- RS Feva S (Dacron
main) plus Jib and Spinnaker - £2851.06
inc vat. Buy 3 and you will pay less
than £2500 ex vat for each boat.
- RS Vision XL -
£4251.06 ex vat (includes spinnaker and
a choice of Dacron or Mylar Mains). Buy
boats with volume discount and a fleet
of 3 will cost less than £3800 ex vat
each. This is the boat which has set the
benchmark in its class for the last 3
years and shows no signs of slowing.
Record sales, a growing Owners Club with
passionately devoted sailors and an
ability to appeal to a broad range of
training environments give the RS Vision
a clear pedigree above the competition.

*prices relate to boats only.
Trolleys, top covers and any additional
equipment will be charged at discount
applicable to volume and will be added to
the total cost. |

Icom HM-165 lanyard speaker mike for
handheld VHF.
A great bit of kit and
well worthwhile having as an addition to the
main unit. The ability to talk without
having to unclip the handheld every time
there is a communication happening is
brilliant. I could tuck my radio away and
just have the lanyard mike connected to the
shoulder strap of my Buoyancy Aid and simply
depress the ptt button and talk normally and
all without having to unclip the mic.
The Icom lanyard mic works
really well when completely dry but looses
definition when wet, unlike the handheld
radio which has more protection of the
speaker / mic from the water. I found it
useful to invert the lanyard mic and clip
upside down on my shoulder strap so that the
water shed itself and did not accumulate,
causing the distortion. Apart from this I
would be very happy to equip all my radios
with one of these.

Crewsaver Shield Buoyancy Aid
|
|
 |
 |
- At last a buoyancy
aid comes along which not only looks the
part but has some extraordinary benefits
through the design features Crewsaver
have added.
- The large double
pocket has plenty of storage for
coaching notebooks and for all the usual
clutter and with an external pocket
primarily for a rescue knife, it seems
that every angle has been looked at.
- The icing on the cake
is the fleece lined hand warmer pouch
that has been designed into the front of
the Shield Buoyancy aid. I could not
think of a better design feature for
instructors and coaches.

Want to get your hands on
new boats - Grant money..a couple of
ideas...
|
 |
|
Youth Opportunity Fund & Youth Capital Fund
Are you 13-19 years old?
Well this money is for you! |
What's this all about?
For the next two years the Government is
giving £115m to local authorities for two
exciting new funds designed to enable you
the opportunity to become actively involved
in funding and running activities and
facilities in your neighbourhood.
So what are these funds for?
Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF)
Each year this fund will divide £31m between
all the local authorities to be used for
things you would like to do and places you
would like to go in your area. This means
you will be able to make decisions about how
the money should be spent and you can apply
for projects and activities that young
people would like to do in your area.
Youth Capital Fund (YCF)
Like the YOF local authorities will share
£26.5m per year BUT this fund is different
because it could help you change and buy new
premises for your projects or build a youth
space within an existing community.
The two funds have been designed to work
together, so you can use the YOF for your
activity (project) and use the YCF to buy
your premises and equipment needed to run
the project.
What's in this for me?
- Improved facilities
in your area
- You will be deciding
what you want in your area
- You can bring about
positive change for young people
- You will be heard by
the community
- Your efforts will be
recognised by the community
- Working on these
projects will help you gain and develop
skills
How do I get involved?
There are three ways you can get involved:
- You can be a member
of the decision making panel, who will
assess the bids coming in and decide who
gets the money.
- You can come up with
ideas of what you would like to do in
your area and make an application as a
Project Leader
- You can participate
in the facilities on offer in your area
as a result of the funds.
Where do I go now for more
information?
For more information about the funds and how
you can get involved please contact your
local authority. |

Training related fleet
development plan proposals.
I have often been asked by those working at
or running Clubs, Schools and Centres, as to
what type of boat is ideal for a particular
class of training environment. Our range of
All Purpose Boats includes some industry
leading names in which the full complement
of RYA training courses can be taught. Many
of the UK's leading training establishments
have either changed their fleet completely
to RS Boats or have complimented their fleet
with a sprinkling of market leading,
innovative dinghies in order to capitalise
on the extra revenue that comes from
introducing a 'new' boat into the boat park.
|
 |
If any of you are in the process of updating
your fleet or are just wanting to know how
our range of dinghies could help your
training establishment, why not print off
the attached Development plan proposal and
fill the details out and send to me for a
complimentary written proposal including
quotation and grant funding application
forms to help you make a start. As an RYA
Centre Inspector and Coach / Assessor with
15 years experience in the industry, having
run an LEA Centre and worked at many clubs,
I am well equipped to offer you advice as to
what you might need and how to use the boats
in your training programme.

RYA Centre inspections and
RS Boats
It has been brought to my attention that
some centres and schools have been given
small action points on their inspection
reports as to the rigging and tuning of some
of their boats. I understand how easy it is
for kit to get neglected and for different
peoples ideas on what is the 'correct' way
of doing things to end up with boats that
are nothing like the manufacturers
recommendations.
I have access to all of the technical
specifications of the training boats and
would happily share this information with
you in order for all of your boats to have
the correct length and thickness of lines
and to be set up according to the latest
tuning guidelines.
Call me on 07887 875015 or e-mail
Dan@RSsailing.com for more on this. |

As well as new boat development and fleet
generation with the Tera and Vision Classes,
I have been enthused by so many of your
positive comments. RS is growing and so is
my job. It will soon be time to get an
assistant. Keep your feedback coming and
keep signing up new converts to RS Training.
Over 1200 clubs and schools now get this.
That's a huge amount of experience and
input. Lets use it and work together.
I can only do as much as you let me do so if
you have any ideas for me with regards fleet
development and boat bits, please call me.
